Make sure New Year’s Eve comes early for you this year

Why is it that we all want to wait until New Year’s Eve before we think about the year just gone and the plans for the year to come?

It just doesn’t make sense to me.

I mean, if you are anything like me, by the time the big clock is bing bonging for midnight, my brain is in no condition for rational thought! It’s just looking for the next chance to get into trouble.

New Year’s Day is no better…..in fact it’s even worse. I can’t think straight with a hangover…and neither can you.

So…let’s all do ourselves a favour and stop what we’re doing right now, grab a coffee, sit down in a quiet place and ask some useful questions to review where we are in business today and think about what we should be planning to do.

Some great questions to ask yourself:

  • Are you and your business in your sweet spot or should you be tweaking your focus?
  • How well is everything really working – and I mean reeaaallllyyyy working? Don’t lie to yourself – you will only be misleading one person!
  • Are all your relationships mutually beneficial? Think about staff, customers, family members, advisers, bankers. Can you do more for them and can they do more for you?
  • Do you need to improve your time management and organisational skills?
  • How effective is your current marketing strategy (do you actually have one?) and what can you do to improve your return on investment?
  • What are you really proud of right now? What are you not so proud of?
  • What projects and tasks should you stop, start or continue?
  • What are your top 5 goals for the next 3 months, 6 months and 12 months?

That’s about enough thinking for one session – your coffee is finished, the phone’s ringing and your work is piling up while you’re wasting time just sitting there!

But seriously…make sure you write down some outcomes from that soul searching session and make a commitment to yourself to at least take some action on the priority issues, and commit to making your New Year’s resolutions on a much more regular basis….and not while you are partying or recovering!

Cheers guys

PS – Can you think of even better questions biz owners should be asking themselves on a regular basis?

I’d love to hear them.
