Lessons on business success and personal well-being from a retiring business leader

When a business leader speaks on business success and personal well-being we need to listen up and learn.

The CEO of one of the most successful conglomerates in Australia retired at the end of October 2017.

He made some comments in his retirement speech about the lessons he learned over 30 years on business success and personal well-being.

Whenever a successful business leader speaks about success, I like to listen and hopefully learn.

Richard Goyder, CEO of Wesfarmers Ltd highlighted six lessons he learned during his time in charge:

  1. Don’t run out of cash
  2. Stuff happens
  3. Surround yourself with good people
  4. Reputation really matters
  5. Governance matters
  6. Without financial performance, you have nothing

Well knock me down and call me stupid! I would swear all six of these lessons are not only common sense, they also apply to small business just as much as large, listed groups!

But I thought everyone tells me that big biz is way different to small biz? Someone’s telling lies I suggest.

Maybe there’s a difference to how high profile CEOs view their personal life. Maybe that’s where it’s different for small business owners?

Let’s see. Richard says:

  1. Without health and well-being you’re no good to anyone
  2. Relationships outside of work and family are critical
  3. Always take your annual leave as it comes due
  4. Always find time to think – perhaps while exercising

Same things we probably say to ourselves.

So there you have it.

The secrets to running a successful business career in big business are no different to the secrets to running a successful small business.

Luckily, that is exactly what we believe to.
